Frequently asked questions
It's natural to have questions when considering play therapy or counselling. I believe in transparency and personal attention, so I've gathered the most common queries parents have. My approach at Play Therapy Works is rooted in quality, integrity, and a deep understanding of children's developmental needs, ensuring you feel confident and supported every step of the way. Play therapy may help if your child:
* has big emotional outbursts,
* is anxious, withdrawn or fearful,
* has experienced trauma or loss
* struggles at school or in relationships
* finds it hard to talk about feelings
What age is play therapy suited for?
I can work with any children who play or who respond to a play based approach. As a general guide, play therapy suits children aged 2 to 12, but children between 10 and 13 years of age may require an adjusted approach, still play based, but more focused on talking through issues than standard play therapy. In this case, I will use CBT or TF-CBT in a play based setting.
How many sessions does a child usually need?
The number of sessions depends on the child's response to play therapy, the issues we are dealing with and the funding we have available. Some funding streams limit the amount of sessions, in which case, I will work with the time I am given. We'll discuss a treatment plan based on your particular circumstances when we meet.
Do parents attend sessions?
Parents/caregivers will attend an initial session with me, without the child present, to discuss the issues, background and other relevant information and to brainstorm solutions that parents can action at home. At this session, we will discuss funding and other logistics. When the child comes for their first session, the parent can come in with them just to get them settled and then you will leave. Thereafter, children will usually be dropped off and picked up from the door. It is essential that children attend therapy on their own so that they can connect with me as their counsellor and feel free to express anything they need to express. Throughout the child's time here, parent sessions can also be scheduled alongside so that I can work with you, if needed.
Is play therapy evidence based?
Yes, absolutely. Play therapy is a well-researched and evidence-based therapeutic approach. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in addressing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and developmental challenges in children. I utilise approaches grounded in clinical research and best practice at Play Therapy Works.
What can I expect when I bring my child to play therapy?
We will start with the intake session where I will meet with parents/caregivers. I need consent from all legal guardians of the child. Sessions are 50 minutes in duration. Usually they are fortnightly. You will always have the same time slot on the same day, so as to keep it easy to remember. I am readily available by email, so if you have any questions or concerns, you are free to email whenever you need to.
What are developmental play therapy sessions?
Developmental play sessions are a service I offer for children who don't necessarily have a problem but perhaps they are not able to play well at home. There can be many reasons for this - no space, sibling interference, device availability, etc. Play can be very beneficial for children even in the absence of a "problem" because play aids their healthy development, hones skills, encourages whole-brain development and builds resilience and relational skills. I can include parents in these sessions at an extra cost. This would be useful for enhancing parental attachment.
What does it cost?
Standard parent and play therapy sessions: $100
Developmental play sessions: $70
If a parent wants to join developmental sessions, there is an extra fee of $15
Parent groups: 4-6 participants, $40 per person per session
Is there any funding available?
I am registered with ACC for sensitive claims
I am also registered with Gumboot Friday, Victim Support, Telus (EAP)
There are some other funding sources I may be able to access, dependent on your situation. This can be discussed at the intake session.
