Based in Blenheim, New Zealand.
Play Therapy is a method of counselling suited to young children, who are experiencing difficulties in any area of their lives. It is very gentle, works with their level of development and allows the child the space to process their difficult feelings, without judgement and without the pressure of an adult agenda.
Play therapy can help with many different challenges faced by children including dealing with parental separation, anxiety, trauma, grief, relational difficulties, some developmental issues, difficulty with adjustments to change, and many other issues.
Play therapy is a very gentle way of working with children. Children's brains are still developing and work very differently to adult brains, therefore the approach to counselling and trauma needs to be different. Adults benefit from using words to explain and process their emotions and difficulties - children are more likely to express and process their emotions and difficulties by acting them out, playing them through with toys or using art or some other form of expression. Play therapy allows a child to work through stuff with or without the need for words.
A play therapy session is 50 minutes in duration. The child will have access to my very well equipped play therapy room where they are sure to find something that appeals to them. I use a very non-directive approach, which means that the child chooses what they do and how they do it and I help the child to process what they need to process without interfering with their play or making them feel like they are being interrogated. From the child's point of view, they come here for a play date and they usually feel good afterward.
